Audition Requirements
We’re excited to welcome both new and returning performers to audition for our upcoming production of Les Misérables! Whether this is your first audition or you’ve been performing for years, please review the information below so you know what to expect.
🎶 What to Prepare
Music: Prepare a song up to 4 minutes long that showcases your voice and fits the musical style of Les Misérables. We are not accepting songs from the show to audition with.
You may perform with:

A backing/instrumental track

An accompanist you bring with you- there is a keyboard in the building.
There will be no dance audition.
Please have your music or track ready when you arrive. The creative team may stop your song before you reach the end. They may simply have heard what they need to hear; this does not mean anything negative about your audition.
Physical Requirement: Please be prepared to answer whether you are comfortable and able to safely lift and hold approximately 30-50 lbs. This information helps the creative team when considering staging and production needs.

October 21: 7:00–10:00 PM
October 22: 6:00–10:00 PM
October 23: 5:30–11:00 PM
Each individual audition will last approximately 7 minutes.
Audition time slots will begin being emailed on October 5. Please keep an eye on the email address you provide on your audition form.
Resumes are encouraged. If you have a theatre or performance resume, please upload it on the audition form, but you do not need previous experience or a resume to audition. Headshots are required. A headshot is an image of only you, typically from the waist up, showing your face prominently. Please upload them on the audition form. If you need a headshot taken, please contact ian@siperformingarts.org
👥 Cast & Age Requirements
We are planning to cast approximately 38–40 performers.
Performers must be at least 10 years old by October 19 to audition. Unfortunately, we cannot accept auditions from performers younger than 10.
For performers under age 13, we require a parent or guardian to be involved with the production to help us maintain a safe and supportive environment for our younger cast members.
Parent/guardian involvement could include performing in the production alongside their child, volunteering backstage, assisting with costumes or sets, serving as a chaperone, or helping in another production role.

Video auditions may be uploaded directly through the audition form or emailed to laura@siperformingarts.org.
Everyone submitting a video audition must also complete the audition form. Emailing a video alone does not complete your audition submission. VIDEO AUDITIONS ARE DUE OCTOBER 22ND BY 6PM
🎭 Casting
Our creative team is planning to cast principal roles, featured roles, and ensemble performers. We may also cast understudies and swings for this production.
What is an understudy?
An understudy learns a principal or featured role so they are prepared to perform that role when scheduled or if the primary performer is unable to perform.
For this production, performers cast as understudies will also perform in the ensemble during performances when they are not playing their understudied role. Each understudy will be guaranteed two performances in the role they understudy.
What is a swing?
A swing learns one or more ensemble/featured roles so they can step into the production if another performer is unable to perform.
Swings are not guaranteed a performance and may primarily be members of the creative or production team who are prepared to step in during an emergency. For someone interested in learning more about this important part of theatre, a swing position can also be a great opportunity to gain experience.

Please review all rehearsal and performance commitments on the audition form before submitting your audition.
📣 Callbacks
Callback Date: TBD
After initial auditions, the creative team may invite some performers to attend a callback.
A callback is an additional audition that gives the creative team an opportunity to see or hear more from you before making final casting decisions. You may be asked to sing part of a specific song, read a scene, perform with other auditioners, or try material for a particular character.
Not everyone will receive a callback, and not receiving one does not mean you will not be cast. The creative team may already have all the information they need from your initial audition.
If you are invited to callbacks, you will receive additional information about what to prepare and what to expect.
Character Breakdowns
Jean Valjean
Sings to B, high lyrics baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.

Javert
Baritone, sings to G. Must have a natural gravitas with ability to be expressive and dynamic. Policemen who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate ‘law and order’ figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with rigid and merciless moral code.

The Bishop Of Digne
Must have a strong, rich lower register to a bottom A. Although capable of playing great age, the actor playing the Bishop is cast in a variety of roles and needs to flexibility to play a range of ages. A religious man who, despite Valjean’s theft of his valuable possessions, sees passed the convict and allows him to move on with his new life.

Fantine
Poor but beautiful and elegant factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although she is finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life.

The Foreman
To form part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensemble part of Factory Foreman. An overbearing, sleazy man who runs the factory. Sacks Fantine, leaving her destitute.

Bamatbois
To form part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensembles part of Bamatabois. A nasty and dangerous upper-class man who lecherously approaches Fantine for the night. When she declines and attacks him, he calls on Javert to arrest her.

Fauchelevant
Fauchelevant is the victim of the cart crash.

Little Cosette
Young Cosette is Fantine’s daughter and the Thénardiers’ ward. She has been forced into child labor. She is underfed, beaten by Madame Thénardier, and bullied by Eponine.

Thenardier
Baritone. Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irrerent, selfish, boorish, vulgar.

Madame Thenardier
Belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role.

Young Eponine
Young Eponine is the pampered daughter of the Thénardiers. She does little except taunt Young Cosette.

Gavroche
Gavroche is Thénardier’s son. He is left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris. Gavroche is brave, witty, and arrogant, with a fantastic, unchanged voice.

Eponine
An enormous and beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve.

Cosette
Soprano to high C but a light, young ‘floating’ sound, without heavy vibrato. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius

Montparnasse
A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. Montparnasse is handsome and dangerous (he kills with a knife).

Brujon

Enjolras
High baritone/tenor. Very strong singer. Handsome, charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement.

High baritone. Member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century ‘Byronic’ way.

Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Combeferre is the philosopher and believer in peace. He is gentle, humane, strong, and brave.

Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Feuilly is a worker who is a self-educated orphan. He is an affectionate, warm, and poetic believer in "nationality."

Courfeyrac
Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Courfeyrac is a youthful, passionate, and fearless student.

Joly
Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Joly is an eccentric and light-hearted (although sometimes morbid) medical student. His name is derived from the English word “jolly.”

Grantaire
To form part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensemble part of Grantaire. A cynical student who has little interest in the revolution but who holds much admiration for Enjolras. Witty and sarcastic.

Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Lesgles is a cheerful, laughing-at-life (but unlucky) student. He is a close friend of Joly.

Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Prouvaire is a kind, soft-spoken, and, at the right moments, strong and masterful poet and student of social studies.
